Nikiti
In Nikiti, apart from the beaches, the sun and the sea, there are attractions that you should not miss to visit.
On the hills above the modern settlement of Nikiti, is the old village of Nikiti. The old village started as a monastery metochi during the late Byzantine period. According to tradition, the village was founded when residents of the coastal settlements of Elia, Kastri and Agios Georgios relocated there due to the frequent pirate raids that afflicted them. During the Turkish occupation it was one of the largest villages of Halkidiki.
Most of the houses were built in the 19th century and are representative samples of Macedonian architecture.
The cemetery church, built in the 16th century, is the oldest building in the old village of Nikiti. It is worth admiring the church of Agios Nikitas that stands on the top of a hill and visit the old primary school of the village which dates from 1870 and today has been renovated and hosts the folklore museum of Nikiti.
A walk in the stone-built alleys of the old village of Nikiti will take you to another era.
